Ultimate Fitness is a certified provider of the Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Appraisal
(CPAFLA) - a fitness evaluation process originally developed by Fitness Canada and sponsored by the
Ontario Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences.
A standardized set of procedures is used to assess the participants fitness levels in the areas of
cardiorespiratory efficiency, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.
Included in the testing:
Body measurements are taken including resting heart rate, blood pressure, height, weight, girth and skin-folds.
Cardiorespiratory efficiency is estimated by monitoring heart rate response while the participant performs a "step test"
at a dictated pace.
Muscular endurance is measured by recording the performance of push-ups and abdominal curl-ups ("crunches") that the
participant is asked to demonstrate.
Muscular strength is measured using grip-strength (as measured through a hand-held device known as a "dynamometer")
as well as a standing vertical leap test.
Flexibility is measured with the "trunk forward flexion" test where the seated participant is asked to lean forward and reach to the
maximum distance possible.
All tests are optional and the procedures are fully explained and demonstrated prior to performance. The
entire procedure lasts from 40 to 60 minutes. The numerical results of all tests are recorded and the
participant receives written documentation, as well as a verbal explanation, of the results and their
significance.
